Mission
Urban Foodworks facilitates the growth of sustainable urban food systems.
Food is the single common element among all people, throughout all cultures, in all areas of the world. Connecting the food we eat with the place, the landscape, and the people that this food comes from is a practice rich with significance for us all. Urban Foodworks strives to meet the critical need for this connection. Urban food production plays a crucial role in food security, social inclusion, and urban waste management. Informed consumer choices are the key to promoting a healthy urban ecosystem. We recognize the power of community gardens, farmers markets, urban farms, and urban green space to serve as a catalyst for neighborhood development, self–sufficiency, and ecological stewardship.
Goals and Objectives
We strive to strengthen the local food network and improve the urban ecosystem in a variety of ways:
- Research community development, social interaction, and food security techniques
- Educate consumers on the positive effects of buying locally
- Demonstrate sustainability in motion
- Advocate for local food production by connecting farmers with consumers
- Implement projects that build local food security in Pittsburgh
- “...how we eat determines to a considerable extent how the world is used.”
- – Wendell Berry
